South African singer Tyla made a powerful impact at the 2024 MTV Europe Music Awards (EMAs) in Manchester, England, on Sunday night, winning three major awards. The talented artist took home the awards for “Best Afrobeats,” “Best R&B,” and “Best African Act,” solidifying her place as one of the continent’s leading musical talents. Tyla’s success at the EMAs comes at a time when African music continues to gain global recognition, with artists like her at the forefront.

Tyla’s achievements followed pop icon Taylor Swift’s dominant performance at the awards, where Swift won four trophies, including “Best Artist” and “Best Video” for her collaboration with Post Malone on the song “Fortnight.” Although unable to attend the ceremony in person due to her ongoing Eras Tour in North America, Swift expressed her gratitude through a video message to her fans. “The fact that you have honoured the tour, everything that’s happened with the album this year, the video, it’s just unbelievable,” said Swift, who released her latest album, The Tortured Poets Department, in April.

A Night to Celebrate African Talent

Tyla’s triple victory at the MTV EMAs is not only a testament to her talent but also highlights the global popularity of African music. Her win in the “Best Afrobeats” category underscores the genre’s rising influence worldwide, driven by energetic beats and a unique sound that resonates with audiences beyond the continent. Winning “Best R&B” further showcases Tyla’s versatility and ability to cross genres, while “Best African Act” solidifies her status as a leading figure representing African music on a global stage.

This recognition at one of the music industry’s biggest award shows underscores the strides African artists are making internationally. Tyla’s rise in the music world is also reflective of the growing influence of African talent in the global entertainment landscape, breaking boundaries and reaching new audiences across the globe.

Tribute to Liam Payne

The 2024 EMAs were held at Manchester’s new Co-Op Live venue and were marked by a moving tribute to late singer Liam Payne. Payne, a former member of the popular band One Direction, tragically passed away last month after falling from a hotel balcony in Buenos Aires. Rita Ora, who has hosted the EMAs three times, led the tribute, becoming visibly emotional as she spoke about her late friend. “He was a big part of the MTV world and my world and I think a lot of yours at home and everybody in here tonight,” said Ora, who collaborated with Payne on the 2018 song For You.

The heartfelt tribute resonated deeply with fans and attendees, as Ora remembered Payne as a vibrant presence who “brought so much joy to every room he walked into and left such a mark on this world.”

Highlights from Other Winners

Alongside Taylor Swift and Tyla’s big wins, other notable names also took home awards. American singer Sabrina Carpenter won “Best Song” for her hit Espresso, while Ariana Grande claimed “Best Pop.” Eminem, a long-time favourite at the MTV EMAs, won “Best Hip-Hop,” adding another accolade to his extensive collection.

The K-pop category saw Jimin from BTS winning “Best K-Pop,” while Mexican artist Peso Pluma was awarded “Best Latin.” Manchester’s own Liam Gallagher received the “Best Rock” award, much to the delight of his hometown fans. Rising star Benson Boone was honoured as “Best New Act,” marking a significant achievement in his burgeoning career.

Special Honours and Performances

The night also featured a memorable performance by U.S. rap legend Busta Rhymes, who performed a medley of his greatest hits and was awarded the prestigious “Global Icon” award in recognition of his lasting impact on hip-hop and global music culture. Additionally, British electro-pop duo Pet Shop Boys received the “Pop Pioneer” award, celebrating their influence on the music industry over several decades. The iconic pair closed the show with a powerful performance, leaving the audience in awe.

A Return to the EMAs

This year’s MTV EMAs marked the show’s return after last year’s event was cancelled following the outbreak of the Gaza conflict, where the situation in Israel and Gaza impacted global events. Held annually in different cities across Europe, the 2024 EMAs took place in Manchester, drawing thousands of fans and industry figures to celebrate the best in global music. The new Co-Op Live venue provided a stunning backdrop for the event, setting the stage for an unforgettable night of performances, tributes, and award presentations.
