The South African government has decided to recall all South African diplomats from Israel for consultation. This decision comes in response to the Israeli government’s refusal to respect international law and its continuous undermining of United Nations resolutions for a ceasefire.
Minister in The Presidency, Khumbudzo Ntshavheni, expressed the disappointment of the Cabinet in a media briefing in Pretoria. He highlighted the dire consequences faced by the people of Palestine, particularly children, women, and innocent civilians, due to the closure of humanitarian corridors. The genocidal airstrikes by the Israeli government on Palestine continue, resulting in a rising death toll that includes women and children.
Over the past two days, the world has witnessed intensified airstrikes on Gaza and the West Bank, leading to the destruction of schools, health facilities, ambulances, and civilian infrastructure. The supposed safe roads, especially those traveling to the South of Gaza, are no longer safe. These atrocities have prompted the Cabinet’s decision to recall all South African diplomats from Tel Aviv for consultation.
According to the Department of International Relations and Cooperation (DIRCO), the Israeli attacks on Gaza since 7 October have claimed the lives of at least 9,227 Palestinian civilians. In contrast, more than 1,400 Israelis, including settlers and soldiers, have been killed in Israel.
The Cabinet is also concerned about the disparaging remarks made by Israel’s ambassador to South Africa, Eliav Belotsercovsky, against South Africans. Belotsercovsky’s remarks target the leadership of South Africa, both in and outside the government, and civil society who are speaking out against the Israeli government’s actions against Palestinians. These remarks stand in stark contrast to the statements of two former Israeli ambassadors to South Africa, Illan Baruch and Dr. Alon Liel, who have consistently described their government’s actions against Palestinians as apartheid.
As a result, the Cabinet has directed the Department of International Relations and Cooperation to formally convey the South African government’s displeasure with Ambassador Belotsercovsky through diplomatic channels.
