South African Chamber of Commerce in the USA Submits Afrikaner Resettlement Data Amid Diplomatic Tensions

Afrikaner Resettlement Data

The South African Chamber of Commerce in the USA (SACCUSA) has provided the U.S. Embassy in Pretoria with information on over 67,000 South Africans interested in resettlement opportunities following President Donald Trump’s executive order offering refugee status to Afrikaners.

SACCUSA’s Initiative

On March 18, 2025, SACCUSA handed over data concerning 67,042 South Africans expressing interest in the resettlement opportunity offered by President Trump’s executive order. This move aligns with SACCUSA’s mission to serve the South African business community and diaspora in the USA, fostering binational trade, investment, and tourism between South Africa and the USA.

Executive Order and Afrikaner Resettlement

President Trump’s executive order, issued on February 7, 2025, directs U.S. agencies to prioritize the resettlement of Afrikaners facing “government-sponsored race-based discrimination,” including racially discriminatory property confiscation.

South Africa’s Response

The South African government has criticized the executive order, highlighting the irony of offering refugee status to a group that remains among the most economically privileged in South Africa. The Department of International Relations and Cooperation (DIRCO) expressed concern over the U.S. decision, emphasizing South Africa’s commitment to finding diplomatic solutions to any misunderstandings or disputes.

Diplomatic Strains

Tensions between the U.S. and South Africa have escalated following the expulsion of South African Ambassador Ebrahim Rasool. U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio declared Rasool “persona non grata,” accusing him of making offensive remarks about the Trump administration during a recent webinar. This move has further strained relations between the two nations.
