South Africa has reaffirmed its commitment to support the Republic of South Sudan in achieving peace, democracy, and development. This comes after the government of South Sudan extended its transitional period by two more years, delaying the national elections initially planned for December 2024.

The extension was officially confirmed in September 2024 by South Sudan’s leadership, citing the need to implement the remaining provisions of the Revitalised Agreement on the Resolution of Conflict in South Sudan (R-ARCSS), which was signed in 2018. The goal of the extension is to allow more time for the parties involved to solidify peace and ensure the successful completion of the transitional period .

In a statement, President Cyril Ramaphosa acknowledged this extension as a positive step, commending the South Sudanese parties for their consensus in this critical decision. He highlighted that this agreement presents an opportunity to implement the outstanding provisions of the R-ARCSS and emphasized the importance of continuing the peaceful atmosphere that has existed since 2018 .

Ramaphosa further called on South Sudan’s Revitalised Transitional Government of National Unity (RTGoNU) to allocate the necessary resources to statutory institutions tasked with delivering free and fair elections. He also encouraged the broader East African Community (EAC) and the international community to maintain their support for South Sudan’s journey towards lasting peace and democracy .

The transitional period, initially set to end in 2024, has now been extended to December 2026, giving South Sudan more time to focus on its peace-building efforts. According to officials, this postponement will allow the government to address key remaining tasks, such as finalizing the permanent constitution and implementing vital security arrangements. These steps are critical for the nation’s stability as it works to transition towards a democratic state .

South Africa, which has long played a role in peacebuilding efforts in South Sudan, reiterated that it will continue offering its full support during this extended transitional period. Ramaphosa’s administration stressed the importance of the South Sudanese government focusing on credible and transparent elections as part of its broader efforts to achieve sustainable peace .

The Revitalised Agreement (R-ARCSS) remains a cornerstone of South Sudan’s progress towards peace, and the involvement of the African Union and other international partners continues to play a key role in monitoring and supporting this process. South Africa has consistently voiced its support for the agreement as the most viable pathway to peace and urged the international community to maintain its backing for South Sudan during these critical years .
