New Covid-19 Subvariant

The National Department of Health has announced the detection of South Africa’s first case of the new Covid-19 subvariant, known as ‘Eris’ or EG.5.

The variant was identified in a lab-tested sample taken from a patient in the Gauteng province, as confirmed by Foster Mohale, the Director of Communications for the Department of Health.

Mohale revealed that the variant had been detected two months ago, emphasizing that there was no cause for panic. He urged the public to remain cautious and adhere to non-pharmaceutical interventions, such as maintaining hygiene practices, using sanitizers, and washing hands with soap and water. While Eris is transmissible, Mohale reassured the public that it is not as severe as the previous variants.

Despite the World Health Organization’s warning about the immune escape characteristics of the EG.5 strain and its potential to cause a rise in infections, Mohale reiterated that there is no need to panic. Medical scientists have affirmed that EG.5 is not expected to increase the severity of infections.
