School Governing Body (SGB)

Pretoria, South Africa – During a key speech at the launch of the 2024 School Governing Body (SGB) Elections Campaign, Basic Education Minister Angie Motshekga has rallied all stakeholders—parents, teachers, non-teaching staff, high school learners, and community members—to join forces and actively participate in the upcoming elections, scheduled for 1 – 31 March 2024.

Addressing the audience in Pretoria on Monday, Minister Motshekga underscored the significance of this civic duty, stating, “As we launch this campaign, I call upon each of you to join us in this crucial endeavour. Engage with the process, educate yourselves and others and most importantly, exercise your right to vote. Your involvement is not just a contribution but a testament to your commitment to the future of our nation’s children.”

The minister emphasized the collective responsibility of society to shape the future of the country’s education. “My call to action today is simple yet powerful: get involved. Whether you choose to stand for election or cast your vote, your contribution holds immense significance,” she added.

Highlighting the impact of effective school governance, Motshekga pointed to compelling statistics: “Schools with high SGB participation report an average 20% higher pass rate than those with lower engagement. Additionally, incidents of vandalism and truancy decrease significantly in schools with active governing bodies.”

The campaign, termed ‘Empower, Engage, Educate’, promises a dynamic outreach to invigorate community participation using digital and traditional media. “There will be workshops, informational pamphlets, and an interactive website, all designed to spread essential knowledge about the roles and significance of SGBs,” Motshekga informed.

The minister acknowledged the past challenges of voter turnout, which hovered around 40%, calling it a “missed opportunity” and a catalyst for action. She reiterated the vital role of SGBs in connecting schools with their communities and lauded the achievements of the class of 2023, in particular.

“In KwaZulu-Natal, where we witnessed a remarkable improvement in results, the unwavering support of SGBs played a pivotal role. This is the power of active and engaged school communities,” Motshekga noted with pride.

In her closing remarks, Minister Motshekga offered a vision of unity and progress: “With this responsibility comes a clarion call: it’s time to raise our voices and shape the education we envision for our children. Transparency and inclusivity are our guiding principles to ensure every voice is heard.”
