South Africa Hosts G20 Meeting

The Department of Women, Youth and Persons with Disabilities (DWYPD) is set to host the 3rd Technical Meeting of the G20 Empowerment of Women Working Group (EWWG) from July 1 to July 4, 2025, at Kruger National Park in Mpumalanga Province, South Africa. This pivotal gathering will unite representatives from G20 member states, guest countries, civil society organizations, and technical experts to advance global efforts toward gender equality and women’s empowerment.

Focus on the Care Economy

Under the theme “The Care Economy – Paid and Unpaid Care Work and Household Responsibilities,” the meeting will spotlight the critical yet often overlooked role of care work in society. According to DWYPD spokesperson Cassius Selala, “The topic aims to address long-standing disparities in the recognition and distribution of care work, which is essential to both household functioning and national economies yet remains undervalued and disproportionately carried by women and girls.”
The discussions aim to reshape how care work—both paid and unpaid—is perceived and managed, with a focus on reducing the burden on women and creating pathways for economic inclusion and empowerment.

South Africa’s Leadership Role

As a key player in the G20 EWWG, South Africa is driving initiatives to enhance women’s participation and representation in leadership, governance, and decision-making. The country is also pushing for greater ownership and control by women across economic and social sectors, reinforcing its commitment to dismantling systemic barriers to gender equality.
Hosting this meeting at Kruger National Park underscores South Africa’s dedication to leading global conversations on these pressing issues, while showcasing its natural heritage on an international stage.

Key Topics on the Agenda

Over the four-day event, delegates will engage in strategic and evidence-based sessions covering a range of topics vital to women’s empowerment:

Global Care Landscape: Recognizing marginalized care relationships and exploring how care work can generate decent and inclusive employment.

Gender Responsive Budgeting and National Care Policies: Sharing cross-country experiences, opportunities, and challenges in implementing policies that prioritize women’s economic roles.

Addressing Gender-Based Violence and Femicide: Developing strategies to combat violence and safeguard women’s rights.

Financial Inclusion for Women: Proposing an action plan to ensure women have equitable access to financial resources.

G20 Gender Mainstreaming Efforts: Reviewing global initiatives to promote women’s economic empowerment.

Gender Equality Across G20 Groups: Ensuring gender equality remains a priority across all G20 Working Groups and Task Forces.
These sessions will foster collaboration and produce actionable solutions to bridge gender gaps worldwide.

High-Profile Speakers and Participants

The meeting will feature prominent voices, including DWYPD Minister Sindisiwe Chikunga, who will lead South Africa’s delegation. Other speakers will include representatives from G20 member states, guest countries, and international organizations such as United Nations Women, the International Labour Organisation (ILO), and the World Health Organisation (WHO). Academic and policy experts from the University of Cape Town, alongside delegates from civil society and G20 engagement groups like Women 20 (W20) and Women Empower 20, will also contribute to the dialogue.
This diverse lineup ensures a rich exchange of ideas, blending policy expertise with on-the-ground perspectives.

Expected Outcomes and Global Impact

The meeting’s outcomes are poised to shape the G20’s policy agenda on women’s economic empowerment, with a strong emphasis on recognizing, reducing, and redistributing unpaid care work. As Selala noted, “This engagement also aligns with Sustainable Development Goal 5 and the G20’s ongoing commitment to the Brisbane Goal 25×25,” which seeks to reduce the gender gap in labor force participation by 25% by 2025.
By addressing the unequal burden of care work, the G20 aims to unlock women’s potential in the workforce, contributing to stronger economies and more equitable societies globally.
