Russia-Ukraine War

International Relations and Cooperation Minister, Dr Naledi Pandor, recently met with her Ukrainian counterpart, Minister Dmytro Kubela, to discuss the ongoing Russia-Ukraine war. Pandor expressed deep concern over the loss of lives and the worsening humanitarian situation.

South Africa, like many countries in Africa, has overcome numerous conflicts and wars over the years. Pandor emphasized the devastating effects of conflicts on the countries involved, including political and economic consequences, as well as development setbacks. As a continent, Africa is committed to building peace and resolving conflicts through peaceful means and diplomacy.

Pandor reiterated South Africa’s belief in the importance of peaceful resolution of conflicts, both in Africa and globally. She emphasized the need for dialogue, diplomacy, and a commitment to the principles of the United Nations Charter. She called on the international community to uphold the principle that all Member States should settle their disputes peacefully.

Turning to the situation in the Middle East, Pandor urged the international community to speak out against the escalating conflict between Israel and Palestine. The Minister condemned the senseless destruction and suffering on all sides and called for an immediate end to hostilities. She also stressed the importance of implementing relevant UN resolutions and decisions to ensure peaceful coexistence between Israel and Palestine.

Minister Kubela expressed his satisfaction with being the first Ukrainian Foreign Minister to visit South Africa in over two decades. He acknowledged the need for regular political dialogue between the two countries and a commitment to avoid prolonged pauses in high-level bilateral contacts. Kubela emphasized the interconnectedness of the world and the importance of addressing regional perspectives and issues in African politics and development.

He called for just and lasting peace in the Middle East based on a two-State solution. Kubela highlighted the need for deeper contact and increased trust between Ukraine and South Africa to address sensitive bilateral and global issues successfully. These issues include implementing Ukraine’s peace formula to end the war, collaboration with international organizations, trade development, digitalization of government services, and agricultural food production across Africa.

The meeting between Pandor and Kubela emphasized the shared concerns and commitment to peaceful resolutions of conflicts. South Africa’s engagement in the Africa Peace Initiative reflects its dedication to addressing the ongoing Russia-Ukraine war. The Minister’s call for international cooperation and respect for the principles of the UN Charter echoes South Africa’s diplomatic approach to resolving conflicts and promoting peace.

As the world witnesses the unfolding tragedies in Ukraine and the Middle East, it is crucial for countries to come together and act for the sake of humanity. South Africa’s stance on these conflicts serves as a reminder of the painful history the country has overcome and its commitment to promoting freedom, justice, and peace.
