South African Weather Service warns of cold weather conditions

South Africa Braces for Warmer Than Normal Conditions and Heat Waves in 2023-2024

The South African Weather Service (SAWS) has announced that South Africa can expect warmer than normal conditions during the summer season of 2023-2024, with a high chance of heat waves occurring over the interior regions. Dr Christien Engelbrecht, the Lead Scientist for Long Range Prediction at SAWS, made this prediction during a press conference in Pretoria.

Engelbrecht explained that this increase in temperature is likely to be influenced by the El Niño event that will affect South Africa during the upcoming summer season. El Niño events are known to bring warmer and drier conditions to southern Africa during the summer months. However, there is uncertainty regarding the typically drier conditions in the northeastern parts of the country, where the current prediction indicates low probabilities for above-normal rainfall.

Furthermore, below-normal rainfall is predicted for the remaining parts of the country. Engelbrecht warned that the El Niño event could become a strong event during the mid-summer months, emphasizing the need for continuous monitoring and updates from SAWS.

While discussing the recent severe thunderstorm that affected parts of Gauteng and Mpumalanga, SAWS clarified that this event cannot be solely attributed to climate change. Although climate change increases the probability of severe weather events, specific incidents like the hailstorm in Johannesburg and tornado in Lekwa Local Municipality are influenced by a range of factors favorable for their development.

SAWS advised the public to follow regular updates of the seasonal prediction as well as short-term weather forecasts and observed climatic conditions. It is important to stay informed about any changes in the weather patterns and be prepared for extreme weather events.

In light of the predictions of warmer conditions and the possibility of heat waves, it is crucial for individuals and communities to take necessary precautions to ensure their safety and well-being. This may include staying hydrated, seeking shade during peak heat hours, and taking measures to prevent heat-related illnesses.
