In collaboration with Operation Vulindlela in the Presidency, the State Security Agency, and the Department of Home Affairs, several initiatives have been introduced:
• Trusted Tour Operator Scheme (TTOS): Launched on 11 February 2025, this digital platform allows approved tour operators to expedite visa applications for travelers from China and India. The system enables tourists using these operators to secure visas within three days, eliminating the need for in-person visits to consulates.
• Electronic Travel Authorization (ETA): This system is designed to further simplify the visa application process, making it more efficient and user-friendly for international travelers.
• Digital Nomad Visas: Introduced to attract remote workers, this visa allows eligible individuals to reside in South Africa while working remotely for foreign employers. The visa is valid for up to three years and requires applicants to meet specific income thresholds and provide proof of employment.

Impact on Tourism and Economic Growth

The tourism sector has shown a robust recovery, with nearly 9 million arrivals in 2024, marking a 5.1% increase from the previous year. The recent visa reforms are expected to further boost these numbers by facilitating easier access for travelers from major source markets.

Minister de Lille emphasized the importance of these developments, stating, “These visa regime enhancements will lead to increased arrivals to South Africa, which will, in turn, assist the government in achieving its goals of driving inclusive economic growth and creating jobs.”

Collaborative Efforts and Future Outlook

The Department of Tourism has been actively engaging with stakeholders in South Africa, China, and India to address visa-related challenges. The recent initiatives by the Department of Home Affairs have been met with positive responses from the tourism sector in all three countries.

On 10 February 2025, Ministers Leon Schreiber and Patricia de Lille addressed the first group of 65 successful tour operators from South Africa, China, and India, who were accepted in the initial phase of the TTOS. These operators have commenced processing visa applications through the new digital system, streamlining the process for individual and group travelers.
