South Africa has extended warm congratulations to President Abdelmadjid Tebboune on his re-election as President of the People’s Democratic Republic of Algeria, following the presidential election held on 7 September 2024. President Cyril Ramaphosa, in an official statement, commended the Algerian people and the National Independent Electoral Authority for ensuring that the election was conducted in a peaceful and orderly manner. The successful election was lauded as a significant milestone in Algeria’s democratic journey.

The re-election of Tebboune marks the continuation of his presidency after securing an overwhelming 94% of the vote. Despite his decisive win, the election was marked by low voter turnout, with fewer than 6 million of the 24 million eligible voters casting their ballots. This ongoing challenge of political disengagement reflects broader concerns about the level of public participation in Algeria’s political processes, an issue that has also been a point of criticism in the past .

Strong Bilateral Relations

South Africa and Algeria share a long-standing partnership rooted in their shared struggles against colonialism and apartheid. Since the advent of democracy in South Africa in 1994, the two countries have continued to strengthen their bilateral cooperation, particularly through the Bi-National Commission co-chaired by their respective Presidents. This partnership encompasses various sectors, including trade, education, and defense cooperation.

In his message, President Ramaphosa emphasized South Africa’s commitment to continuing to work alongside Algeria to further deepen these ties. He highlighted the importance of building strong people-to-people relations and collaborating on the consolidation of the African Agenda. Both nations are pivotal players in advancing the ideals of Pan-Africanism and advocating for the promotion of peace and development across the continent .

Celebrating Algeria’s Commitment to Democracy

The South African government underscored the significance of Algeria’s commitment to democratic principles. Tebboune’s re-election is seen as an important moment for Algeria, reflecting the country’s dedication to maintaining stability and democratic governance despite regional challenges. The successful election process demonstrates Algeria’s intent to uphold these principles, which are crucial for both domestic and continental stability.

In addition to congratulating Tebboune, South Africa praised the efforts of the Algerian National Independent Electoral Authority and other national stakeholders who played a key role in facilitating the election. Their commitment to creating a conducive environment for free and fair elections was acknowledged as a positive reflection of Algeria’s democratic evolution .
