South African National Defence Force (SANDF)
By Mpho Moloi
In the wake of escalating violence in the eastern Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), where 13 South African National Defence Force (SANDF) soldiers have tragically lost their lives in recent clashes with M23 rebels, a wave of public sentiment has emerged on social media platform X (formerly Twitter). Users are calling upon members of former President Jacob Zuma’s uMkhonto weSizwe (MK) party, known for donning military-style camouflage uniforms, to deploy to Goma and assist the embattled SANDF troops.
The MK party, established by Zuma in December 2023, has often been seen in military attire, symbolising a readiness to defend and uphold certain ideals. This imagery has led some social media users to suggest that the party’s members could provide support to South African forces currently engaged in the DRC.
The situation in Goma has deteriorated rapidly, with M23 rebels, reportedly backed by Rwanda, capturing significant territories, including the strategic city of Goma. This advance has resulted in heavy casualties and a dire humanitarian crisis, with hospitals overwhelmed by the influx of wounded civilians and soldiers.
The SANDF has suffered significant losses, with four soldiers recently killed in a mortar attack near Goma airport, bringing the total number of South African peacekeepers killed to thirteen since the conflict intensified. Despite these challenges, the SANDF remains committed to its peacekeeping duties under the United Nations Stabilisation Mission in the Democratic Republic of Congo (MONUSCO) and the Southern African Development Community (SADC) Mission in the DRC (SAMIDRC).
