Polokwane, Limpopo — The recent discovery of the bodies of 45-year-old Maria Matsobane Makgato and two other victims at Sebayeng village in Limpopo has cast a sombre shadow over the nation’s Women’s Month celebrations. The incident has been strongly condemned by Social Development Minister Sisisi Tolashe, who highlighted the tragic irony of such violence occurring during a month dedicated to the celebration and empowerment of women.

A Brutal Incident Amid Celebrations

August is traditionally a time when South Africa honours the contributions and struggles of women under the theme “Celebrating 30 Years of Democracy Towards Women’s Development.” However, the murder of Ms. Makgato, a mother of four, has starkly underscored the ongoing challenges women face, particularly gender-based violence. Minister Tolashe expressed her deep sadness and disturbance at the news, lamenting the violence against women during a time meant for their protection and celebration.

A Call for Collective Reflection and Action

Minister Tolashe emphasized that Women’s Month should not only be a time of celebration but also a period of reflection on the achievements of women over the past 30 years of democracy. She stated, “This month coincides with the country’s commemoration of 30 Years of Freedom and Democracy, making this year’s Women’s Month an important juncture for collective reflection on how we have empowered and advanced the rights of women on our democratic journey.”

In light of the ongoing violence against women, the Minister called on society to come together to combat the patriarchal structures that continue to undermine women’s rights. She highlighted the importance of promoting gender equality as part of the nation’s democratic progress.

Support for the Bereaved Family

Following the discovery of Ms. Makgato’s body, the Department of Social Development in Limpopo dispatched social workers to visit her family in Kotishing, Polokwane. The social workers found that Ms. Makgato was unemployed and relied on the Child Support Grant to provide for her children. Her three youngest children are still in school, while her eldest, aged 22, works as a casual laborer on a local farm, with his contract set to expire in December.

To support the bereaved family, the Department has initiated several measures. These include the provision of psychosocial support services and Social Relief of Distress. The social worker assigned to the case will continue to offer ongoing support, including aftercare services, and will compile a report to determine a suitable guardian for the children. The family will also receive assistance in finalizing the funeral arrangements, pending the results of the post-mortem.
