Skeem Saam Shines at SAFTAs 2024

Skeem Saam emerged as a big winner at the 2024 South African Film and Television Awards (SAFTAs), held on 27 October and broadcast live on SABC2. The popular TV soap opera, produced by SABC Video Entertainment, took home four awards out of its seven nominations, solidifying its place as a beloved staple of South African television. Winning in the categories of Best Actress in a TV Soap, Best Achievement in Scriptwriting, Best Directing, and the coveted Best TV Soap, Skeem Saam continues to capture the hearts of audiences across the nation.

Hosted by the charismatic duo Lerato “LKG” Kganyago-Ndlala and Skhumba Hlophe, the SAFTAs 2024 celebrated the achievements of South African television’s finest. The event honoured the talent, dedication, and creative brilliance that shape the local entertainment industry, with Skeem Saam leading the charge. Elizabeth Serunye, who plays the role of Principal Thobakgale, won the Best Actress in a TV Soap award, highlighting her exceptional portrayal of a beloved character. This win, along with awards for scriptwriting and directing, underscores Skeem Saam’s impact on South African audiences and its role in bringing authentic, relatable stories to life on screen.

SABC Video Entertainment’s Dominance at the SAFTAs

In addition to Skeem Saam’s success, SABC Video Entertainment celebrated a total of 15 wins at the awards, showcasing the network’s commitment to nurturing local talent and delivering high-quality content. SABC1’s Reno Race was awarded Best Structured or Docu-Reality Show, and Music Is My Life – Joseph Shabalala and Ladysmith Black Mambazo took home the award for Best Achievement in Directing – Documentary. These wins reflect SABC’s dedication to showcasing diverse stories that resonate with audiences locally and internationally.

The night also saw MTV Shuga Down South clinch the award for Best Youth Programme, while the popular sports variety show Sport@10 on SABC1 earned the title of Best Variety Show. These accolades highlight SABC’s strong performance across a range of genres, from youth programming to documentary storytelling and reality television.

Memorable Moments and Performances

The SAFTAs 2024 wasn’t just a night of awards; it was a celebration of South African music and culture, with live performances adding an extra layer of excitement to the evening. The show opened with an energetic act by legendary performer Zola, setting a vibrant tone for the night. Audiences were also treated to memorable performances by Holly Rey, Brenda Mtambo, and Pabi Cooper, making it a night to remember.

The Craft Awards ceremony, which took place earlier on 25 October, featured performances from Keabetswe Motsilanyane (KB), Clint Brink, Danny K, Karlien van Jaarsveld, and Amapiano sensation Khanyisa. Hosted by Kuhle Adams and Christopher Jaftha, the Craft Awards recognised achievements in technical and artistic excellence, celebrating the behind-the-scenes talent that brings South African television to life.

Honouring Icons and Lifetime Achievers

A highlight of the night was the presentation of the Lifetime Achiever Award, honouring Generations – The Legacy creator and Executive Producer Mfundi Vundla, as well as industry veteran Arthur Molepo, known for his role as Captain Malebana on Skeem Saam. These icons were celebrated for their immense contributions to South African television, with their work inspiring generations of actors, writers, and producers.

Tebatso Mashishi, who plays Kgosi Mulaudzi on Muvhango, received the Outstanding Person with Disability Contributor Award, an accolade that celebrates diversity and inclusion within the industry. The recognition of these figures underlines SAFTAs’ dedication to honouring individuals who have made a lasting impact on South African television.

Award-Winning Productions Across Genres

Among the award-winning shows was Pale Ya Kosa on SABC2, which took home the Best Made For TV Documentary or Documentary Series. The Khoekhoe Saga won the Best Educational Programme award, reinforcing SABC’s commitment to educational content that enlightens and informs South African audiences.

The Best Supporting Actor award was posthumously given to the late Mpho Sebeng for his role as Skhumbuzo on The Estate, a touching tribute to his talent and contribution to South African television. Additionally, Baking With The Reys won Best Children’s Programme, and the globally popular Masked Singer earned the title of Best International Format, showcasing SABC’s versatility in delivering family-friendly and internationally recognised content.
