The South African Springboks may face the formidable All Blacks in Cape Town without their inspirational captain, Siya Kolisi, after he suffered a significant facial injury during their thrilling 31-27 victory over New Zealand at Ellis Park. The injury, which appears to be a fractured cheekbone, occurred late in the game, raising concerns about Kolisi’s availability for the upcoming rematch.

Kolisi, who was substituted in the 61st minute after initially passing a Head Injury Assessment (HIA), was visibly swollen around the face after the match. According to Springboks’ head coach Rassie Erasmus, the injury is likely to be a fracture, potentially ruling Kolisi out of the crucial Cape Town encounter on Saturday .

The injury also casts doubt on who will lead the Springboks if Kolisi is indeed sidelined. The Springboks have a few potential candidates for captaincy, including Eben Etzebeth, Pieter-Steph du Toit, and Bongi Mbonambi, all of whom have previously stepped up in leadership roles when Kolisi was unavailable .

Adding to the team’s woes, winger Kurt-Lee Arendse, who also sustained an injury during the match, is unlikely to play in Cape Town after failing his HIA. Despite these setbacks, the Springboks will enter the Cape Town match with confidence, sitting at the top of the Rugby Championship table after three consecutive victories, including their latest hard-fought win over the All Blacks .

This latest injury scare comes at a crucial time for the Springboks, as they prepare for the fourth round of the Rugby Championship, where they aim to solidify their lead and continue their momentum heading into the Rugby World Cup later this year. The team and fans alike will be anxiously awaiting further updates on Kolisi’s condition as the countdown to the rematch continues .
