Springbok captain Siya Kolisi has confirmed his departure from Racing 92, marking the end of his year-long stint with the French Top 14 club. Kolisi’s decision to leave Racing 92 and return to South Africa was officially announced on Monday, 9 September 2024, ending months of speculation about his future at the club level.
Kolisi, who joined Racing 92 after South Africa’s triumphant 2023 Rugby World Cup campaign, played 18 matches during his time in France. Despite the initial excitement surrounding his move, both parties agreed to terminate the contract early, with two years remaining on his deal. Reports indicate that the decision was influenced by Kolisi’s family feeling homesick, as well as his struggles to balance international duties with the rigorous demands of the French Top 14 .
Reflecting on his time abroad, Kolisi expressed gratitude towards Racing 92 for accommodating his decision to return home. “My family and I have enjoyed a wonderful year abroad, but we have missed South Africa, and it’s time to come home,” Kolisi said. He praised Racing 92 as a “great club steeped in tradition,” and expressed his excitement about rejoining the Hollywoodbets Sharks for the upcoming 2024/2025 season .
Kolisi initially joined Racing 92 after his second World Cup victory with the Springboks. However, his international commitments, particularly with the Springboks, limited his availability for the French side, raising concerns about his ability to meet the physical demands of both club and international rugby . Kolisi mentioned in an interview that while he felt capable of contributing to South Africa’s national team, balancing that with the Top 14’s long season became physically unsustainable .
Despite the challenges, Kolisi’s leadership and commitment were praised by Racing 92. His departure was amicable, with both parties expressing mutual respect and gratitude for their time together. Racing 92’s centre Gael Fickou was quoted saying, “If he feels like his family is not well settled in France, we respect his decision” .
Now set to rejoin the Sharks, Kolisi is eager to once again play in front of South African fans. “I cannot wait to run out onto the park at Hollywoodbets Kings Park during the 2024/2025 rugby season,” he said .
This return to the Sharks brings Kolisi full circle, as he initially left the franchise in 2023 to pursue his overseas career. His return will undoubtedly boost the Sharks, who will benefit from his leadership and experience as a two-time World Cup-winning captain .
