Six Suspects Killed in KZN: Police Clamp Down on Crime in Early Morning Operations
KwaZulu-Natal police have reported the fatal shooting of six suspects involved in violent crimes, including cash in transit robberies. This incident took place in two separate engagements in the early hours of this morning, Thursday, 16 May 2024.
Brigadier Jay Naicker, the spokesperson for the KZN Police, detailed that the confrontation led to the recovery of five firearms, marking a significant strike against criminal activities plaguing the region. “Four men, believed to be instrumental in a spate of cash in transit heists across KwaZulu-Natal, met their demise following a shootout with law enforcement in Camperdown,” Naicker disclosed. This comes after an elaborate intelligence operation by a team of officers from various units including the Hawks, pinpointed the suspects’ location. Upon their arrival, the officers were immediately met with gunfire, to which they responded, culminating in the death of the four suspects and seizure of three firearms.
The police’s resolve was further tested in a separate incident at the Klaarwater Hostel, near Mariannhill. Members of the National Intervention Unit, acting on intelligence, aimed to apprehend two suspects wanted for intimidation, extortion, and other crimes. The confrontation that ensued led to both suspects being fatally wounded after they opened fire on the officers. Two additional firearms were recovered in this operation.
KZN Police commissioner Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi highlighted the extensive efforts by the police to track down these criminals, some of whom have eluded capture for months. “Our determination to dismantle this criminal network remains unwavering. With six suspects already neutralized, our quest continues to apprehend additional members of this group and to confiscate high calibre weapons still at large,” Mkhwanazi said.
