Six members of the South African National Defence Force (SANDF) tragically lost their lives in a raging veld fire. The incident occurred in Kathu, a small town in the Northern Cape Province, where the local police are currently conducting an investigation into the incident.

Colonel Cherelle Ehlers, the Police Spokesperson, shared that on the 6th of October, 2023, Kathu was engulfed by veld fires that quickly spread to the Lohatla SA Army Combat Training Centre. This devastating fire took the lives of four men and one woman, with another female member passing away in the hospital due to injuries sustained in the incident.

Apart from the irreplaceable loss of lives, the veld fire also caused extensive damage to vehicles, tents, and equipment in the area. In light of this unfortunate event, the SANDF has promised to initiate a thorough investigation into the incident. As a mark of respect for the deceased and their families, the names of the fallen soldiers will only be released once their next of kin have been informed.

Expressing her deepest condolences, Northern Cape Provincial Commissioner, Lieutenant General Koliswa Otola, extended her sympathies to the grieving families and the colleagues of the fallen soldiers.
