Siwelele FC
Siwelele FC has welcomed Lerato Kholanyane as its new chief executive officer. The announcement came with a heartfelt letter from Kholanyane, shared on 1 October 2025, where she expressed her deep gratitude and vision for the team’s future.
This move follows a period of changes at the club, including the recent departure of former CEO Stan Matthews and assistant coach Andre Arendse. As Siwelele gears up for the rest of the 2025/26 Betway Premiership season, Kholanyane’s leadership brings hope for stability and growth. With her roots in the Free State and a passion for the game, she aims to unite fans and players in reviving the club’s glory days.
The appointment highlights ongoing efforts to strengthen South African football, especially in the Free State where Siwelele has a strong following. As the club navigates challenges like financial management and on-field performance, Kholanyane’s message calls for teamwork to overcome hurdles and build a brighter path.
Kholanyane’s Warm Welcome and Personal Background
In her letter, Kholanyane shared her excitement about joining the Siwelele family. “I want to express my deepest gratitude for the warm welcome you’ve extended, making me feel like a true member of the Siwelele family from day one. It is an immense honor to take on the role of CEO for this cherished club—an opportunity that both humbles me and fills me with excitement for the challenges and victories that lie ahead.”
She opened up about her roots: “For those curious about my background, I am a proud child of the Free State, born and raised in Botshabelo. At the youthful age of 41, I am a mother of two and the eldest sibling to a younger sister and brother. I completed my schooling and studies in Bloemfontein.”
Kholanyane’s ties to the region run deep. She founded Black Hearts FC, a local team aimed at uniting and showcasing Botshabelo’s soccer talent. Her early involvement in football, starting as the team’s kit manager in her teens, gave her valuable insights into the sport’s highs and lows. This experience, combined with her business acumen, positions her well to lead Siwelele through its current phase.
Vision for Siwelele: Financial Success and Player Welfare
Kholanyane outlined her priorities in the message, emphasising financial stability and player support. “A key priority for me is ensuring our players achieve lasting financial success through wise investments and sound financial management. We must break the cycle of players transitioning from heroes to hardship after their careers end.”
She also spoke of her commitment to the club’s revival: “Together with the Siwelele management team, I am fully committed to this province. We aim to boost the economy of Bloemfontein and the Free State.”
Drawing from her diverse career in mining, events management, transport, logistics, and hospitality, Kholanyane expressed confidence in transforming Siwelele into one of Africa’s top brands. “In my personal capacity, I’ve acquired and revitalized struggling businesses, and I’m confident we can transform Siwelele into one of the biggest football brands in Africa. I believe in running a tight ship and delivering results.”
Her message ended on an uplifting note: “I share the chairman’s lifelong passion for keeping Siwelele FC, the green-and-white heartbeat of South Africa’s heartland. With the best fans in the world by our side, there is nothing we cannot achieve together. We owe so much to you, the revival of Bloemfontein’s beloved team. It is back, and it will conquer all. Phunya Sele Sele!”
Siwelele FC’s History: From Bloemfontein Celtic to New Era
Siwelele FC rose from the ashes of Bloemfontein Celtic, a club with a rich legacy in South African football. Celtic, founded in 1969, won three consecutive Premiership titles under coach Gavin Hunt in 2007-08, 2008-09, and 2009-10. Known for passionate fans and a fighting spirit, the team faced financial troubles leading to its sale.
In July 2025, Patriotic Alliance leader Gayton McKenzie bought the club for R50 million, rebranding it as Siwelele FC. The name, meaning “we are conquering” in Sesotho, reflects a fresh start while honouring Free State roots. The move aimed to revive the team, which had been sold to Royal AM in 2021 but struggled since.
Under new ownership, Siwelele has made headlines with signings like former Orlando Pirates striker Zakhele Lepasa, ex-Kaizer Chiefs player Tebogo Potsane, veteran defender Buhle Mkhwanazi, and midfielder Relebogile Mokhuoane. These additions boost the squad as they compete in the Betway Premiership, aiming to climb from mid-table positions.
Recent Shake-Ups: Leadership Changes and On-Field Adjustments
Kholanyane steps in as interim CEO after chairman Calvin Le’John fired Stan Matthews and assistant coach Andre Arendse in September 2025. The reshuffle followed a rocky start to the season, with the team seeking stability. Le’John, a key figure in the club’s revival, has focused on building a strong foundation.
The new CEO’s appointment, linked to her Patriotic Alliance ties and reported past relationship with McKenzie, has sparked discussions. Described as a wealthy businesswoman from Botshabelo, her experience in turning around ventures aligns with Siwelele’s goals.
On the pitch, Siwelele faces rivals like Marumo Gallants in upcoming matches, with history on the line at venues like the “Slaughterhouse.” Fans hope the changes bring wins and a return to former glory.
