The Special Investigating Unit
The Special Investigating Unit (SIU) has recently entered into a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Interpol National Central Bureau (NCB) for South Africa, a move that is set to bolster the unit’s capabilities in combating cybercrimes and transnational organized crimes.
According to a statement released by the SIU, the MoU will provide the unit with direct access to Interpol’s extensive information system, which spans 195 countries. This access will significantly enhance the SIU’s capacity to tap into a global network of data systems, providing valuable resources for their investigations.
In addition to access to Interpol’s information system, the MoU will also include up-to-date training resources that will further equip the SIU with the necessary skills and knowledge to effectively combat cybercrimes.
The agreement, which was signed by SIU head Advocate Andy Mothibi and Interpol NCB’s Brigadier Ntime Mokhine, marks a significant milestone for both organizations. Advocate Mothibi highlighted the alignment of the MoU with the SIU’s current vision for combatting cybercrimes and transnational organized crimes, emphasizing the importance of building data analytics and forensics capacity.
Brigadier Mokhine also emphasized the significance of the MoU, stating that it will pave the way for Interpol to build relationships with South African law enforcement agencies and extend their international reach.
