The State Information Technology Agency (SITA) has settled its municipal account with the City of Tshwane following a temporary suspension of services at its head office in Erasmuskloof, addressing a R3.2 million shortfall attributed to underestimated electricity usage over the past three months.

Power Disconnection Highlights Billing Dispute and Prompts Swift Resolution

The State Information Technology Agency (SITA) confirmed on Wednesday, 13 August 2025, that it has fully settled its outstanding municipal account with the City of Tshwane, resolving a billing dispute that led to a brief power disconnection at its Erasmuskloof headquarters earlier in the day. The agency attributed the R3.2 million shortfall to underestimated electricity consumption over the previous three months, which caught up in the latest billing cycle. Following a review of usage patterns, SITA has adjusted its average monthly consumption forecast to approximately R2.6 million to align more accurately with actual needs and prevent similar issues in the future.
The temporary suspension of electricity supply occurred when City of Tshwane officials disconnected power due to the unpaid amount, highlighting ongoing challenges with municipal billing accuracy and payment delays in government entities. SITA emphasised that the interruption was brief and did not disrupt its core operations, as backup systems and contingency measures ensured continuity of critical services. “SITA has taken full accountability for the situation and stated that it has implemented stronger monitoring and billing engagement processes to avoid a recurrence,” the agency noted in its statement, reaffirming its commitment to transparency and accountability with all public sector partners.
This incident is not isolated, as SITA has faced similar billing discrepancies in the past, often stemming from variable usage in its data centres and IT infrastructure that support government digital services. The settlement was processed promptly after verification of the account, allowing power to be restored without further delays. City of Tshwane officials confirmed the payment, praising SITA for its cooperative approach in resolving the matter amicably.
