Floyd Shivambu on Thursday confirmed that he has resigned from the Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) and is joining former president Jacob Zuma’s MK Party. This development follows a significant political shift where the EFF lost its position as the third-largest party in South Africa, a status it held until the 29 May general election when the MK Party overtook it, becoming the official opposition in the National Assembly.
Julius Malema, the leader of the EFF, formally accepted Shivambu’s resignation during a press briefing held at the EFF’s headquarters, Winnie Madikizela Mandela House, in Johannesburg. Malema acknowledged Shivambu’s decision to step down from his role as Deputy President of the party and revealed that Mzwanele Manyi, another prominent political figure, has also moved to the MK Party. Manyi is expected to be sworn in as a parliamentarian today.
Malema addressed the press with a heavy heart, stating, “I stand before you to accept the decision of the Deputy President of the EFF, who has voluntarily resigned his positions and did not renew his membership.” His emotional response highlighted the close bond he shared with Shivambu, referring to him as both a comrade and a brother, despite the political divergence.
In a statement reflecting on his departure, Shivambu emphasized his continued commitment to the ideals of economic emancipation and Marxist-Leninist principles. He stated, “I have served with humility and discipline. I will never abandon the cause for economic emancipation and true freedom in our lifetime.” His letter, addressed to Malema, requested that the EFF avoid any slander or mischaracterization of his decision, stressing that it was a revolutionary act aimed at uniting progressive forces for the greater good.
The press briefing was an opportunity for the EFF to publicly read out Shivambu’s resignation letter. In it, he explained his decision not to renew his membership and requested to be released from all party duties, including his position as a Member of Parliament. “The Chairperson of Ward 44 Johannesburg has informed me that my membership of the EFF has lapsed. Please be informed that I will not renew my membership of the EFF,” Shivambu wrote.
Malema’s response to the resignation was a mix of respect and resolve. He assured the EFF’s ground forces that the party would continue its mission, despite this setback. “This is a testing moment. An organization that has lived beyond 10 years has never been through this testing moment. The EFF will have to pass this test,” Malema declared, signaling that the party’s journey is far from over.
The MK Party, led by Jacob Zuma, welcomed Shivambu and Manyi with open arms. In an official statement, Nhlamulo Ndhlela, a spokesperson for the MK Party, expressed that the onboarding of these politically experienced leaders could not have come at a better time. The statement underscored the importance of their roles in advancing the party’s agenda within the Progressive Caucus.
Shivambu’s move comes at a time of political realignment in South Africa, as the MK Party solidifies its position in parliament, overtaking the EFF and assuming the role of official opposition. This shift in the political landscape, coupled with the recent resignation of key figures like Shivambu, marks a new chapter in South Africa’s evolving political narrative.
In his final remarks at the briefing, Malema reiterated his unwavering commitment to the EFF, stating, “I will be buried with the FLAG OF THE EFF. My coffin will be wrapped with the FLAG OF THE EFF, and I will never turn my back on my people.” His words resonated with the party faithful, ensuring them that the EFF’s doors would remain open and that the organization would continue to fight for economic freedom and social justice.
