Severe Thunderstorms and Flooding Devastate KwaZulu-Natal: Residents Urged to Exercise Caution

KwaZulu-Natal

By Karabo Marifi

Severe thunderstorms continue to batter the southern regions of KwaZulu-Natal, bringing heavy rainfall and widespread flooding. The South African Weather Service (SAWS) has issued a Level 5 weather warning, indicating a high risk of severe weather conditions.

The persistent downpours have led to numerous road closures across the eThekwini Municipality and surrounding areas. Residents are advised to avoid crossing flooded roads and bridges, stay indoors if possible, and follow updates from local authorities.

In Durban’s Wentworth area, the flooding has caused significant damage to cemeteries, with reports of tombstones being washed away. This has added to the distress of local communities already grappling with the severe weather conditions.

Emergency services are on high alert, responding to incidents and assisting those affected by the floods. Residents are urged to seek higher ground and adhere to safety advisories to mitigate the risks posed by the ongoing severe weather.

The situation remains critical, and authorities are closely monitoring weather developments to provide timely updates and ensure public safety.
