Seven men aged between 27 and 75 have been apprehended for the unlawful possession of firearms in the Ekombe area. The region falls under the jurisdiction of the Muden policing precinct. The arrests were the result of a meticulously planned, intelligence-driven operation led by the Umzinyathi District Task Team in coordination with SAPS’ National Deployment team.

Intelligence-Driven Operation Prevents Possible Murder

On Monday, following a tip-off, police received information regarding a group of men present at a homestead in Ekombe, allegedly in possession of high-calibre firearms. The prompt response by the police prevented a potential murder.

“Police swiftly responded to the identified area and on arrival, six men were arrested after being found with an AK47 rifle, a 308 hunting rifle, and three pistols, all loaded with ammunition,” said the SAPS in an official statement.

Second Arrest and Additional Seizures

The operation did not end there. The police proceeded to a second location where additional intelligence suggested the presence of another suspect in possession of illegal firearms. Upon arrival, police detained one male suspect who was discovered with an AK47 rifle and a .38 special revolver, alongside more ammunition.

All Suspects Detained and Expected in Court

All seven suspects are currently detained at Muden Police Station and are set to appear in the Greytown Magistrate Court soon. Their arrests signify a substantial crackdown on illegal firearm possession in the region.

Official Commendation

The District Commissioner, Major General Francis Slambert, commended the police personnel for their swift and effective action. “Congratulations to all the police members involved in bringing the perpetrators to book,” he stated.
