Seven Killed in Mpumalanga Tavern

In the early hours of Saturday, 11 January 2025, a tragic shooting at a tavern in Pienaar township, Mpumalanga, resulted in seven fatalities and multiple injuries. Six individuals were pronounced dead at the scene, while a seventh succumbed to injuries in hospital. An unconfirmed number of patrons sustained injuries and are currently receiving medical treatment. 

Incident Details

The shooting occurred at a local tavern in Pienaar, near Mbombela. According to eyewitness reports, several lifeless bodies were found near two cars parked on the tavern premises. The exact sequence of events leading to the shooting remains unclear. Mpumalanga police spokesperson, Donald Mdhluli, stated, “We can confirm that seven people were fatally shot and an unconfirmed number of victims have been taken to hospital and are in a critical condition.” 

Ongoing Investigation

Authorities have initiated a manhunt for the suspects involved in the shooting. As of now, no arrests have been made, and the motive behind the attack is unknown. Mdhluli added, “No arrests have been made; we are still looking for the suspects and also the circumstances of how they were shot.” 

Community Impact

The incident has sent shockwaves through the Pienaar community, raising concerns about safety and security in local establishments. Community members are urged to remain vigilant and to provide any information that could assist law enforcement in apprehending the perpetrators.

Authorities’ Response

The South African Police Service (SAPS) in Mpumalanga has expressed concern over the rising number of murder cases in the region. In a previous statement, police spokesperson Selvy Mohlala noted, “We have seen cases in Pienaar where about two people were killed. We have seen in other areas where people have been killed.”
