Sergeant Silindile Njilo, a dedicated crime prevention officer with the South African Police Service (SAPS) at Ntuzuma police station in KwaZulu-Natal, has captured the hearts of the nation through her extraordinary act of kindness and dedication.

As part of SAPS’ celebration of Women’s Month, the story of Sergeant Njilo is a shining example of the compassion and commitment that South Africa’s women in blue bring to their roles. Her journey of selflessness was thrust into the spotlight on 5 May 2024, when an unexpected event unfolded during her day shift—a day that would not only change the life of an abandoned baby girl but also highlight the true spirit of service.

On that fateful day, Njilo encountered an abandoned baby girl at the Client Service Centre (CSC) of the Ntuzuma police station. The infant, later affectionately named “Tholakele” by Njilo, had been brought in by the owner of a local tavern after being left behind by her biological mother. The name “Tholakele,” meaning “being found” in isiZulu, perfectly encapsulates the miraculous nature of her discovery and the bond that soon formed between her and the sergeant.

Without hesitation, Njilo sprang into action. She returned home briefly to fetch a washbasin, then returned to the station to bathe and clothe Tholakele in fresh attire. Njilo’s nurturing instincts were evident as she fed the baby while waiting for social services to arrive. It was as though Tholakele instinctively understood that she was safe in Njilo’s arms, solidifying a bond that continues to this day.

Tholakele has since been placed in a place of safety, but Njilo’s connection with the child endures. She frequently visits Tholakele, caring for her with the same love and attention she would give her own children. For Njilo, this act of humility and compassion is deeply rooted in her upbringing. Raised by a single mother in a household that struggled financially, Njilo’s mother instilled in her the values of kindness and selflessness, teaching her to “be a light and take care of those who need help.”

This ethos has carried over into Njilo’s professional life. Beyond her responsibilities as a crime prevention officer, which include addressing public complaints, attending to crime scenes, and detaining suspects, Njilo is known for her generosity within the community. She often uses her own money to purchase essentials and food for those in need, further demonstrating her commitment to service.

Njilo’s dedication to her role and her community has not gone unnoticed. Her actions have resonated across South Africa, especially during Women’s Month, as SAPS honours the women who not only uphold the law but also embody the spirit of compassion and inclusivity. Njilo, a devoted wife and mother of two, considers her work with SAPS as the fulfilment of a lifelong dream—to serve and protect her community.

In her own words, Njilo calls on the community to support SAPS officers in their mission to create a safer country for all. “I urge our community members to support and stand alongside members of the South African Police Service. Because, together we can achieve more towards a safer country for all,” she said.
