Sekhukhune United winger, Shaune Mogaila, has been released on R20,000 bail after appearing in the Thembisa Magistrate’s Court on charges of culpable homicide, reckless, and negligent driving. The charges stem from a tragic accident in Rabie Ridge, Gauteng, where Mogaila’s vehicle allegedly struck a nine-year-old girl, Gomolemo Mavimbela, resulting in her death, and injured her mother and a 13-year-old neighbour.

The incident occurred on 28 October 2024, when Mogaila was reportedly driving in the Rabie Ridge area. According to eyewitness accounts, the child was crossing the street with her mother and a neighbour when the vehicle struck them. Emergency services arrived promptly, but the young girl succumbed to her injuries on the scene. The mother and the 13-year-old were transported to a nearby hospital and are currently recovering.

Mogaila, 29, voluntarily surrendered to the police following the incident and was subsequently charged. During his court appearance, the magistrate set bail at R20,000, with no additional conditions restricting his daily activities or interactions with witnesses. The case has been postponed to 4 February 2025, allowing time for further investigations and the completion of medical reports.

The football community has been left in shock by the incident. Sekhukhune United has expressed its condolences to the Mavimbela family and stated that they are cooperating fully with the ongoing investigation. In a brief statement, the club mentioned, “We are deeply saddened by the tragic event involving our player, Shaune Mogaila. Our thoughts and prayers are with the affected families during this difficult time.”

Mogaila, who joined Sekhukhune United in July 2024 after leaving Royal AM, has been a notable figure in South African football. His career includes stints with Highlands Park and TS Galaxy, and he has earned caps for the national team.

Legal experts note that charges of culpable homicide in South Africa can result in severe penalties, including imprisonment, especially when negligence is proven. The upcoming court proceedings will be crucial in determining the outcome of this case.

The Mavimbela family, mourning the loss of young Gomolemo, has called for justice. Community members in Rabie Ridge have also expressed their grief and are planning a vigil in memory of the deceased child.
