New Head Coach
By Sello Masilo
Sekhukhune United Football Club has officially announced the appointment of Eric Tinkler as their new head coach, effective immediately. Tinkler, a seasoned football tactician with over 30 years of experience, steps into the role following the recent departure of Lehlohonolo Seema.
A Rich Footballing Pedigree
Born on 30 July 1970 in Roodepoort, South Africa, Eric Tinkler’s football journey is both extensive and illustrious. As a player, he operated primarily as a midfielder and had stints with clubs such as Wits University, Vitória de Setúbal, Cagliari, Barnsley, and Bidvest Wits. On the international stage, Tinkler earned 45 caps for the South African national team between 1994 and 2002, contributing to Bafana Bafana’s triumphant 1996 African Cup of Nations campaign.
Transition to Coaching
Transitioning seamlessly from player to coach, Tinkler embarked on a managerial career that has seen him at the helm of several prominent South African clubs:
• Orlando Pirates (2013–2016): Tinkler led the team to the CAF Confederation Cup final in 2015, showcasing his aptitude on the continental stage.
• Cape Town City (2016–2017): In his inaugural season, he guided the club to a Telkom Knockout victory, underscoring his capability to inspire and lead.
• SuperSport United (2017–2018): Tinkler’s tenure included a notable run to the CAF Confederation Cup final in 2017, further cementing his reputation.
• Maritzburg United (2019–2020): His strategic insights were pivotal in stabilising the team’s performance during challenging periods.
• Cape Town City (2021–2024): Tinkler returned to the club, continuing to instil a competitive spirit and tactical discipline.
Vision for Sekhukhune United
Sekhukhune United, affectionately known as “Babina Noko,” has demonstrated ambition in the Premier Soccer League (PSL). The club’s chairman, Simon Malatji, expressed his enthusiasm about Tinkler’s appointment, stating, “We are honoured to have an experienced mentor like Tinkler in charge of our project.”
Tinkler’s coaching philosophy is characterised by a forward-thinking approach, emphasising tactical flexibility and player development. His preferred formation, the 4-3-3 attacking setup, aligns with Sekhukhune United’s aspirations for dynamic and offensive play.
Reinforced Technical Team
Joining Tinkler’s technical team is Marc van Heerden, a former Orlando Pirates defender and UEFA B License holder, who will serve as an assistant coach. Van Heerden’s recent transition from player to coach brings fresh perspectives to the team’s dynamics.
Additionally, the technical team includes Paulus Masehe and Nascent Nkhwashu (goalkeeper coach), both of whom bring valuable experience and insights, aiming to elevate the team’s performance to new heights.
Immediate Challenges and Opportunities
Tinkler’s immediate focus will be on preparing Sekhukhune United for their upcoming fixtures, with the Nedbank Cup quarterfinal against Mamelodi Sundowns being a significant test. The match, initially scheduled for this weekend, has been postponed due to a scheduling conflict at Lucas Moripe Stadium.
The postponement offers Tinkler additional time to implement his strategies and acquaint himself with the squad, potentially turning this scheduling hiccup into a preparatory advantage.
