A 51-year-old security officer employed by a Durban-based company was tragically gunned down on Estuary Drive in Missionlands, Durban, while on duty. The officer was part of a security team providing protection to eThekwini Water Services employees who were in the area to replace water pipes.

The horrific incident occurred in the early hours when the officer, along with a colleague, was stationed near a Nissan bakkie. According to eyewitness accounts, the assailants, believed to be four armed suspects, approached the security officers.
During the altercation, they robbed the colleague of a Norinco 9mm pistol, containing eight rounds of ammunition, before shooting the 51-year-old victim multiple times in the head, chest, and face.

Local authorities, including Reaction Unit South Africa (RUSA), were alerted to the scene after nearby security officers were flagged down by a passerby who heard the gunshots. Paramedics arrived promptly but, unfortunately, the security officer was pronounced dead at the scene due to the severity of his injuries .

This brutal attack has shocked the local community, and police have launched a manhunt for the suspects, who fled on foot after the shooting. Investigations are underway, with law enforcement urging anyone with information to come forward .

This incident highlights the increasing dangers faced by security personnel in Durban, as reports of attacks on officers have become more frequent. Just days prior, another security officer was gunned down in a separate drive-by shooting in Springfield Park, Durban.

The eThekwini Municipality has expressed its condolences to the victim’s family and condemned the violent act. Local security companies have called for heightened measures to protect their staff, particularly those working in high-risk areas.
As investigations continue, Durban authorities are urging residents to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activity.
