Gauteng Police

Gauteng police have confirmed the murder of a second bus driver in Soweto, following two separate shootings on Monday night in Protea Glen. The incidents have raised concerns over public transport safety, prompting Rea Vaya to temporarily suspend its services.
According to Gauteng police spokesperson Dimakatso Nevhuhulwi, the first shooting occurred at a traffic light, where an unidentified gunman targeted the bus driver. The second incident was reported by a passenger who was the last person on board before hearing gunshots.
“On the second incident at Tshithuthune Street, the eyewitness reported that he was the last passenger on the bus when he heard gunshots and took cover. After it got quiet, he realised that the driver was shot. He tried to drive the bus but crashed into a wall. The driver was declared dead on the scene, and the passenger sustained no injuries,” said Nevhuhulwi.
The motive behind the shootings remains unclear, and police investigations are ongoing.
Rea Vaya Suspends Operations
In response to the attacks, Rea Vaya confirmed via social media that it has suspended operations temporarily to ensure the safety of its staff and commuters.
“The safety of our drivers and passengers is our top priority. We have suspended services until further notice as we engage with authorities regarding these incidents,” the company stated.
The suspension is expected to affect thousands of daily commuters who rely on the Rea Vaya bus service for transport across Johannesburg.
Growing Concerns Over Public Transport Safety
The shootings come amid ongoing tensions in Johannesburg’s public transport sector, with disputes between taxi associations, bus operators, and city authorities over routes, payments, and competition.
The City of Johannesburg (CoJ) is currently in talks with taxi associations to resolve disputes related to overdue payments for operators, which have previously led to violent incidents. However, it remains unclear if these attacks are linked to those tensions.
Gauteng police have urged anyone with information to come forward as investigations continue.
