Chairman Gareth Ackerman expressed his gratitude towards Boone, acknowledging the immense challenges he faced during his two-and-a-half-year tenure as CEO. Boone successfully navigated the company through the turbulent times of the Covid pandemic, the civil unrest, and the ongoing load shedding crisis. Ackerman commended Boone for his leadership in launching the Ekuseni strategic plan, which resulted in the accelerated growth of the Boxer, Clothing, and Omnichannel sectors, along with the successful introduction of the QualiSave brand.

However, Ackerman admitted that the core Pick n Pay business has faced significant difficulties in recent months and has not met expectations. As a result, the board made the decision for a change in leadership, which led to Summers’ appointment.

Summers has an extensive history with the company, having worked at Pick n Pay from 1974 to 2007. During his tenure, he held the positions of Managing Director in 1997 and CEO in 1999. Acknowledging Summers’ deep knowledge and experience within the industry, Ackerman expressed his delight in Summers’ return to the company. He emphasized Summers’ passion for revitalizing Pick n Pay’s performance and rebuilding trust and loyalty among both existing and new customers, stating that Summers is undoubtedly the perfect person for the job.

Summers himself expressed his excitement in rejoining Pick n Pay, declaring that retailing is his passion and this company runs through his veins. He stated his enthusiasm and energy for the task ahead and his commitment to bringing Pick n Pay back to its deserving position in the market.
