SASSA Responds to Allegations of Mispayment to Deceased Recipients

The South African Social Security Agency (SASSA) has addressed recent claims that over 74,000 deceased recipients were mistakenly paid by the agency in a statement provided by Social Development Minister Lindiwe Zulu. SASSA acknowledged the presence of corrupt activities but maintains that the majority of the mispayments were due to delays in reporting deaths and the timing of payment extractions.

The agency explained that as part of the standard payment process, payment beneficiary details are compared with the Department of Home Affairs (DHA) to verify if recipients are still living. However, SASSA only becomes aware of a beneficiary’s death when it is reported by family members or the DHA. Delayed reporting of deaths can result in preemptive payment releases, leading to exceptions for prematurely distributed money.

SASSA added that a review of beneficiary personal details is conducted through face-to-face interactions, but if a client has passed away, they will not be able to participate in the review process. The agency highlighted that the 74,000 deceased beneficiaries represent only 0.01% of the total population paid by SASSA every month.

Furthermore, SASSA is collaborating with the Department of Home Affairs to align their systems and prevent future incidents of premature payment releases. The agency also emphasized its commitment to working with law enforcement agencies to curb corruption, as well as implementing a fraud-prevention strategy in line with the National Anti-Corruption Strategy.
