Sassa Launches Verification Campaign for Grant Recipients

Sassa

The South African Social Security Agency (Sassa) has initiated a verification campaign targeting grant recipients suspected of not disclosing additional sources of income. This effort is part of a broader strategy to combat fraud and ensure that social assistance is directed only to those who genuinely qualify, amidst growing pressure to maintain the integrity of South Africa’s social grant system, which supports over 28 million people.

Purpose and Scope of the Campaign

Sassa’s review process aims to identify beneficiaries who may have undeclared income or alternative financial support that could affect their eligibility for social grants. The agency has flagged thousands of recipients for this verification, emphasizing that the initiative is not meant to penalize legitimate beneficiaries but to safeguard public funds and ensure the sustainability of the program

.
Urgent Action Required

Beneficiaries who did not receive their monthly grant payments are urged to visit their nearest Sassa local office immediately. According to the agency, “Clients who were not paid are requested to visit their nearest Sassa local office. Sassa will determine eligibility of the client upon review to check if the beneficiaries still qualify.” This step is critical, as non-compliance could lead to severe consequences.

Consequences of Non-Compliance

Sassa has warned that failure to participate in the verification process may result in serious repercussions:

  • Suspension of Grants: Beneficiaries who do not comply risk having their grants temporarily suspended.
  • Permanent Loss: Continued non-compliance could lead to the permanent cancellation of their grants.
    Required Documents for Verification
To complete the review process, affected beneficiaries must submit the following documents:
  • Certified copy of ID document or smart ID card (original must be presented).
  • Bank statements for all active accounts covering the past three months.
  • Proof of discharge from last employer or a sworn affidavit if this is unavailable.
  • Certified birth certificates of children linked to the grant, accompanied by affidavits confirming the whereabouts of biological parents.
  • Documentation of property ownership, including rates and taxes for unoccupied properties.
  • Any paperwork reflecting additional income.
These documents will help Sassa assess whether beneficiaries still meet the eligibility criteria for their grants.
