Sasol Renews Banyana Banyana Sponsorship
Johannesburg – Global energy giant Sasol has stepped in to secure the future of Banyana Banyana by renewing its sponsorship of the South African women’s national football team until 2029.
This move ends months of worry after the previous deal ran out on 30 June 2025, ensuring the team can focus on the pitch without financial headaches.
As the longest backer of women’s football in South Africa since 2009, Sasol’s support has been key to Banyana’s growth, from qualifying for big tournaments to inspiring young girls across the country.
The South African Football Association (SAFA) says the longer talks gave both sides time to line up goals that will help women’s football thrive. This renewal is a big win for the sport, especially as Banyana gears up for the 2026 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations and aims to build on their 2022 WAFCON title.
Sasol’s commitment shows faith in women’s sport at a time when funding can be hard to find. With this deal, Banyana can plan ahead, from training camps to youth programmes, helping grow the game from grassroots to the top level.
A Timely Renewal After Uncertain Times
The old sponsorship ended on 30 June 2025, leaving Banyana in limbo as talks dragged on. SAFA noted that the extra time helped both parties agree on shared aims for women’s football. “The previous sponsorship cycle concluded on 30 June 2025. While renewal negotiations took longer than initially anticipated, the extended period provided an opportunity for both parties to align on shared objectives that will ultimately benefit women’s football,” SAFA said in a statement.
Sasol, a major player in energy and chemicals, has been Banyana’s main sponsor for over 15 years. Their backing has helped the team reach new heights, like winning the 2022 WAFCON and qualifying for two World Cups. The new deal runs until 2029, giving five years of steady support. Sasol shared the news on social media: “We’re proud to announce the renewal of our longstanding sponsorship of Banyana Banyana until 2029.”
This renewal is a relief for fans and players, who worried about cuts to programmes without funding. It also boosts SAFA’s work to grow women’s football, from school leagues to pro setups.
Sasol’s Long-Standing Role in Women’s Football
Since 2009, Sasol has poured millions into Banyana and related projects. Their support covers training, travel, and development, helping build a strong pipeline of talent. The company sees this as part of its push for gender equality and community growth in South Africa.
Sasol’s involvement goes beyond money – they run programmes like coaching clinics and youth tournaments to get more girls playing. This has helped raise Banyana’s profile, making them role models for young athletes. The team’s success, like reaching the World Cup last 16 in 2023, shows the impact of steady backing.
In a country where women’s sport often gets less attention, Sasol’s role stands out. SAFA president Danny Jordaan has praised them as a true partner in building the game.
Benefits for Banyana and Women’s Football
The new deal means Banyana can keep building on recent wins. With funding secure, they can focus on qualifying for major events and growing the squad. It also helps SAFA’s plans for the Sasol Women’s League, a key feeder for the national team.
For young players, this means more chances to train and compete. Sasol’s programmes reach schools and communities, inspiring the next generation. “Sasol has renewed its sponsorship of South African women’s football, extending its partnership with SAFA until 2029,” one report noted, highlighting the boost for the sport.
This renewal could draw more sponsors to women’s football, showing it’s a smart investment. With Banyana ranked high in Africa, their success brings pride and opportunities.
