Pretoria, 15 July 2024 – The Commissioner of the South African Revenue Service (SARS), Edward Kieswetter, is set to hold a media briefing on Tuesday, 16 July, to provide an update on the progress of the Tax Filing Season 2024.

“Today marks the continuation of the Tax Filing Season 2024 for provisional and non-provisional taxpayers, who were not selected for Auto Assessments (AA), which commenced on 1 July 2024,” SARS said in a statement. The AA accommodated approximately 4.8 million taxpayers this year, compared to about 3.8 million last year. SARS has also increased the number of digital platforms available to taxpayers to interact with SARS, facilitating a smooth and seamless filing season.

Progress and Strategic Plans

SARS highlighted the progress made so far in the 2024 Tax Filing Season, noting the increase in the number of taxpayers accommodated by the Auto Assessment system. This significant growth from 3.8 million to 4.8 million taxpayers showcases SARS’s commitment to enhancing efficiency and taxpayer convenience.

Commissioner Kieswetter expressed his enthusiasm, marking the fourth year of SARS’s five-year strategic plan initiated in 2020. “Part of SARS’s strategic plan is to cultivate a culture of voluntary tax compliance, underpinned by nine strategic objectives that guide the work we do,” SARS said.
