The South African Police Service (SAPS) has announced its plans to monitor places of leisure, such as fan parks and public gatherings, ahead of, during, and after the 2023 Rugby World Cup final match.

In a statement released on Saturday, the SAPS assured the public that they have comprehensive operational plans in place to ensure the safety and security of these events.

Under the command of National Commissioner, General Fannie Masemola, the National Crime Combatting Forum (NCCF), which comprises all Provincial Commissioners, gathered to discuss the implementation of these plans. General Masemola expressed his satisfaction with the arrangements, which form part of Operation Shanela. This includes initiatives such as regular roadblocks, stop and searches, as well as the tracing of wanted suspects.

The SAPS is calling upon the cooperation of the public attending these public viewing venues to conduct themselves responsibly. They also emphasized the need for citizens to remain vigilant of their surroundings while celebrating and warned against drinking and driving, as such actions will be dealt with accordingly.

Tonight, the Springboks will face off against New Zealand at the Stade de France in France. The team is determined to retain the Webb Ellis Rugby World Cup. Kickoff is scheduled for 21:00 this evening and will be broadcast on various sports channels and the South African Broadcasting Corporation (SABC).
