South African Police Services (SAPS)
The South African Police Service (SAPS) will hold its annual National Police Day this Thursday with a range of fitness activities aimed to boost the physical readiness of its members.
SAPS has emphasized the importance of health and wellness among its ranks, marking a special occasion with sports events and fitness activities as part of the National Police Day celebrations. The day will kick off with an invigorating fun run at 05:30, followed by an aerobics session, with police members also engaging in a variety of sports such as netball and soccer.
“The main objective is to encourage our members to participate in sport and to instill a health and wellness culture within SAPS,” a spokesperson for the organization stated. “We understand that physical fitness is not just beneficial for personal health but is crucial for the demanding nature of policing.”
In an effort to support the physical well-being of its officers, SAPS entered into a memorandum of understanding with well-known gym franchises Virgin Active and Planet Fitness last year. This partnership is reflective of the commitment to ensure that police members have access to facilities and resources to remain fit and healthy.
The Minister of Police, General Bheki Cele, along with Deputy Minister Cassel Mathale and National Commissioner General Fannie Masemola will lead by example as they join the festivities and partake in the exercise activities, symbolizing leadership’s support for a fitter police service.
National Police Day, officially sanctioned by the Cabinet on 27 January 2005, serves not only as a day to promote fitness but also as a day of remembrance for the sacrifices made by the SAPS members. “Today, we honor the sacrifices of the men and women in blue who have dedicated their lives to the safety and security of all South Africans,” stated General Masemola .
