The South African Police Service (SAPS) has reported significant progress in its ongoing Operation Vala Umgodi, with 239 suspects arrested across the country between 1 and 15 June 2025. This multi-agency initiative, aimed at combating illegal mining and related crimes, continues to disrupt criminal networks in South Africa’s mining regions. The recent arrests highlight the operation’s effectiveness in tackling a range of offences, from illegal mining to violent crimes and immigration violations.

Overview of the Arrests and Seizures

During this two-week period, the 239 suspects were apprehended for various crimes, including:

  • Illegal mining-related offences
  • Attempted murder
  • Possession of unlicensed firearms
  • Possession of unpolished diamonds
  • Unlawful possession of explosives
  • Contravention of the Immigration Act
In addition to the arrests, law enforcement seized:
  • Six unlicensed firearms
  • 26 rounds of ammunition
  • Four vehicles
These efforts underscore the operation’s focus on dismantling illegal mining syndicates, commonly known as “zama zamas,” and addressing the broader criminal activities tied to this illicit trade.

Spotlight: Sydwell Shane Mkhantswa’s Arrest

A key highlight of the operation is the arrest of 42-year-old Sydwell Shane Mkhantswa, who appeared in the Kwa-Mbonambi Periodical Court on Tuesday, 18 June 2025, facing charges related to the theft of minerals from Richards Bay Minerals (RBM).
Details of the Case

  • Initial Incident: On 3 March 2024, Operation Vala Umgodi members and Kwa-Mbonambi police intercepted a truck carrying zircon worth over R800,000, suspected to have been stolen from RBM.
  • Further Investigation: The probe linked Mkhantswa to another theft case in Kwa-Mbonambi, where he allegedly delivered RBM minerals valued at R24 million to Isiphingo, Durban.
  • Arrest: After months of tracking, Mkhantswa was apprehended on 12 June 2025 at a residence in Germiston, Gauteng.
  • Next Court Date: He is scheduled to appear again on 24 June 2025 for a formal bail application.
This high-profile arrest demonstrates the operation’s commitment to targeting significant players in the illegal mining trade.

Operation Vala Umgodi: A Broader Perspective

Launched in December 2023, Operation Vala Umgodi—meaning “Close the Hole” in isiZulu—targets illegal mining hotspots in seven provinces: Free State, Gauteng, KwaZulu-Natal, Limpopo, Mpumalanga, Northern Cape, and North West. Since its inception, the operation has achieved remarkable results:

  • Over 27,000 suspects arrested
  • More than 600 firearms seized (including imitation firearms)
  • 16,000 rounds of ammunition confiscated
The SAPS, alongside partners like the South African National Defence Force (SANDF) and the Department of Mineral Resources and Energy (DMRE), continues to prioritize disrupting illegal mining networks that undermine South Africa’s economy and security.
