Operation Shanela
The South African Police Services (SAPS) have continued their comprehensive efforts to combat crime throughout the country, resulting in over 300,000 arrests since the launch of Operation Shanela in May 2023.
Heightened foot, vehicle, and air support patrols have been deployed to identified hotspot areas, including ports of entry, roads, and public spaces, in a push to minimize criminal activity.
The festive season operations have seen over 61,000 patrols conducted, with a focus on deterring crime as people return to work and school. Collaborative roadblocks and vehicle checkpoints, involving local, provincial, and national authorities, have been instrumental in detecting illegal firearms, narcotics, and stolen vehicles. During the peak holiday season, law enforcement efforts resulted in nearly 50,000 arrests for various crimes, along with the recovery of numerous firearms and hijacked vehicles.
Notable arrests include the apprehension of suspects involved in fatal shootings in Soshanguve and Gugulethu, with the recovery of an AK47 in Soshanguve. Joint operations with the South African National Defence Force (SANDF) have also led to the arrest of 290 illegal miners in six provinces.
Statistics from the period leading up to Christmas and the New Year reveal significant arrests for offenses such as murder, rape, driving under the influence, and possession of illicit substances. General Fannie Masemola, the National Commissioner of SAPS, emphasized the importance of community cooperation in combating crime and ensuring the safety of schools during the back-to-school period.
General Masemola urged communities to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activities, underscoring the crucial role of citizenry in supporting law enforcement efforts.
