SAPS Operation Shanela II in Northern Cape Leads to 308 Arrests in Latest Phase
By Nkosana Khumalo
The South African Police Service in the Northern Cape is continuing its efforts to address crime through Operation Shanela II, with the most recent phase from Monday, 25 August to Sunday, 31 August 2025 resulting in the arrest of 308 individuals for a range of offences including murder, attempted murder, rape, assault, burglary, theft, possession of unlicensed ammunition, malicious damage to property, illegal liquor trading, possession of dangerous weapons, driving under the influence, drug-related offences, illicit mining, stock theft, and immigration violations.
Overview of Operation Shanela II in the Northern Cape
Operation Shanela II is a high-density policing strategy rolled out across South Africa to clamp down on crime through visible and targeted actions. In the Northern Cape, this ongoing initiative has seen police teams step up their game in all five districts, focusing on hotspot areas where violent and contact crimes are a big problem. The latest week-long push, running from 25 to 31 August 2025, built on earlier successes and showed the police’s commitment to making communities safer.
This phase involved a mix of activities like setting up vehicle checkpoints, carrying out stop-and-search operations, doing foot and vehicle patrols, and checking compliance at various spots. Officers stopped and searched 3 546 vehicles and 6 663 people during roadblocks and patrols. They also inspected places such as second-hand goods dealers, scrapyards, recyclers, private security companies, firearm dealers, formal and informal businesses, farms, and mining sites to ensure everything was above board.
These efforts are part of a bigger national plan, where similar operations across the country have led to thousands of arrests each week. For example, in the week before, from 18 to 24 August 2025, police nationwide nabbed 18 634 suspects, with 399 of those in the Northern Cape alone. That phase included a coordinated inter-provincial operation that resulted in 116 arrests across districts like Frances Baard, Namakwa, and Pixley Ka Seme, along with seizures of illicit cigarettes, stolen goods, and vehicles linked to crime.
Going back further, the operation has been consistent. Between 11 and 17 August 2025, 318 people were arrested in the province, with a focus on drugs and other serious crimes. In the ZF Mgcawu District, police confiscated drugs worth R30 933 during that time. Even earlier, from 4 to 10 August 2025, 338 suspects were taken into custody for offences like murder, rape, and burglary.
Breakdown of Arrests and Seizures
The 308 arrests in this latest round covered a wide array of crimes that affect everyday life in the Northern Cape. People were picked up for serious stuff like murder, attempted murder, and rape, as well as assault, burglary, and theft. Others faced charges for having unlicensed ammo, damaging property on purpose, trading liquor without permission, carrying dangerous weapons, driving while drunk, dealing or having drugs, illegal mining, stealing stock, and breaking immigration rules.
Several of those arrested were wanted for skipping court or breaking court orders, which shows how the operation is helping to clear outstanding warrants. Police also seized large amounts of alcohol, drugs, and cash thought to come from crime. These confiscations disrupt illegal activities and hit criminals where it hurts – in their pockets.
In one standout action during the week, police in the Frances Baard District arrested suspects for drug possession and dealing after stop-and-searches. On 27 August 2025, a 21-year-old man was caught with drugs in his car, leading to more finds at his home. Similar busts happened across districts, with teams finding hidden stashes and making quick arrests.
This builds on patterns from previous weeks. For instance, in mid-August, a major drug bust in the Namakwa District netted hydro dagga worth over R1.8 million, showing how the operation is targeting big players in the drug trade.
Community Engagement and Awareness Campaigns
Operation Shanela II is not just about arrests – it also includes efforts to build stronger ties with communities. During this phase, police ran awareness campaigns on women’s empowerment and fighting gender-based violence. These were done in partnership with the SAPS Women’s Network, Men for Change, and local community policing forums.
The campaigns reached people across the province, sharing messages on how to spot and report abuse, and encouraging men to stand against violence. This ties into Women’s Month activities in August, where similar drives happened in other provinces too. By involving community groups, the police aim to create lasting change and get more people involved in keeping their areas safe.
Statements from Leadership
Lieutenant-General Koliswa Otola, the Provincial Commissioner of the Northern Cape, gave a shout-out to all the law enforcement teams and partners for their hard work. She stressed how important it is for police, communities, and the private sector to team up against crime. “The collective efforts and actions executed during this period show our commitment to curbing and eradicating crime,” she said, echoing sentiments from earlier phases.
Otola also encouraged ongoing collaboration, noting that tips from the public have been key to many arrests. This approach has helped in tracing wanted suspects and seizing illegal items, making the operation more effective.
