By Mpho Moloi
LIMPOPO, SOUTH AFRICA – A week-long operation by the South African Police Service (SAPS) in the Limpopo province has culminated in an impressive haul, resulting in the arrest of 462 suspects involved in various criminal activities. The operation, dubbed “Operation Kukula,” spanned multiple locations from 17 June to 23 June 2024.
A Coordinated Effort Across Various Units
According to Police Spokesperson Colonel Malesela Ledwaba, the meticulously planned operation involved coordinated efforts from several SAPS units, including the Tactical Response Team (TRT), the K9 Unit, Crime Intelligence Unit, Illegal Mining Task Team, Flying Squad, and Detectives. These teams received additional support from the South African National Defence Force (SANDF), Traffic Police, Community Policing Forum (CPF), Youth Desk, Civilian Secretariat for Police Service (CSS), and private security firms.
Diverse Range of Charges
“The arrested suspects face charges ranging from murder, attempted murder, rape, assault GBH, armed robbery, and drug trafficking,” said Colonel Malesela Ledwaba. “In addition, 56 wanted suspects in connection with violent and serious crimes were traced and apprehended as part of the intensified operations.”
Significant Seizures
As part of the operation, authorities confiscated several counterfeit goods, illicit cigarettes, drugs, alcohol, stolen property, and an undisclosed amount of cash. These seizures are believed to have a substantial impact on crime levels in the affected areas.
Community and SAPS Collaboration
Colonel Ledwaba emphasised the importance of community involvement in the ongoing fight against crime. “SAPS will continue to work closely with community leaders and residents to ensure ongoing safety and security,” he stated.
Leadership and Dedication
Lieutenant General Thembi Hadebe, the Provincial Commissioner of SAPS in Limpopo, lauded the efforts of the officers involved in Operation Kukula. “We will continue to pursue criminals relentlessly and bring them to justice,” she asserted.
