By Thys Khiba – The Mitchell’s Plain magistrate’s court has convicted a former South African Police Service (SAPS) employee, Jerome Claude Hendricks for corruption and dealing in illicit cigarettes.

The 50 year-old former police officer was arrested in February 2011, in Beaufort West.

“At the time of the incident, he was driving his personal vehicle having travelled from Pretoria destined for Cape Town,” said Provincial spokesperson for Hawks, Zinzi Hani.

According Hani to the convicted former officer was found escorting a truck loaded with illicit cigarettes worth more than R495 000-00.

The truck was stopped and searched resulting in the contraband being seized and the case transferred to the Hawks for further investigation which has culminated in Hendricks’ conviction.
