KwaZulu-Natal Provincial Commissioner, Lieutenant General Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi, was awarded the ‘Risk Influencer of the Year’ by the Institute for Risk Management South Africa (IRMSA). The accolade was presented by IRMSA President Bheki Gutshwa and CEO Yvonne Mothibi.

The Risk Excellence Awards celebrate individuals who excel in protecting people, reputation, and profits while mitigating risks to promote national safety and interests. Lt Gen Mkhwanazi’s dedication to fostering a culture of risk awareness and resilience in KwaZulu-Natal and across South Africa was highlighted as a key factor in his selection.

Under his stewardship, the province has adopted innovative risk management strategies, enhancing community safety and security. Expressing his gratitude, Lt Gen Mkhwanazi stated, “This award recognises SAPS’ dedication to risk management and our commitment to creating a safer and more secure environment for all.”

National Commissioner of the South African Police Service (SAPS), General Fannie Masemola, extended his congratulations, noting that the honour reflects exceptional leadership and the capacity to inspire SAPS members to prioritise risk management, uphold the rule of law, and bolster confidence in the organisation’s crime-fighting capabilities.

IRMSA has previously honoured prominent South African figures with the ‘Risk Influencer of the Year’ award, including President Cyril Ramaphosa and Chief Justice Mogoeng Mogoeng. General Masemola remarked, “We congratulate Lt Gen Mkhwanazi on this well-deserved recognition and look forward to his continued leadership in this critical province.”

Lt Gen Mkhwanazi’s career is distinguished by a steadfast commitment to integrity and effective policing. Appointed as KwaZulu-Natal’s Provincial Commissioner in 2018, he has been instrumental in implementing strategies that address both crime and systemic challenges within the police force. His leadership during periods of civil unrest and his efforts to maintain public order have been particularly noteworthy.
