Provincial Commissioner Praises SAPS Northam Detectives After Ugandan National Gets Double Life Sentence for Murder

Polokwane, South Africa – The Provincial Commissioner of SAPS in Limpopo, Lieutenant General Thembi Hadebe, has praised the meticulous investigation conducted by Detectives at SAPS Northam in the Waterberg District. This commendation follows the handing down of two life sentences to Ugandan national Sulaiman Kamya (29), who was found guilty of the brutal murder of a couple in a revenge attack.

Police spokesperson Colonel Malesela Ledwaba recounted the harrowing details of the case: “On 04 January 2019, the charred remains of Joshua Mutaasa (38) and his wife Rita (43) were discovered at their residence in Wildebeeslaagte, Northam. Investigations revealed that the couple had been violently attacked with a sharp object before their house was set alight. It was also established that the deceased’s silver BMW sedan was stolen.”

The investigation team pursued leads to Rustenburg, North West, where Kamya was apprehended on the same day. A crucial breakthrough came when one of the deceased’s cellphones was found at Kamya’s residence. Blood-stained trousers, which had already been soaked in water, were also discovered. The vehicle was recovered from a local scrapyard where its details were being altered. Additional items belonging to the deceased were found in an open field, further incriminating Kamya.

“The accused, Sulaiman Kamya, was charged with two counts of murder and house robbery,” said Ledwaba.

During the trial, evidence proved that the murders were premeditated and executed as an act of revenge. “The accused wanted to buy the couple’s vehicle on an instalment plan. After paying a portion, he later requested a refund, claiming he could no longer afford the balance. The victims promised to return the money later, but Kamya became aggressive, forcibly entered their home, and demanded his money back. He then murdered the couple, set their house on fire, and stole some properties, including the vehicle in dispute,” explained Ledwaba.

Detective Sergeant Thabiso Seshoka led the investigation and managed to oppose bail, ensuring Kamya remained in custody until sentencing. On Wednesday, 22 May 2024, the Modimolle Regional Court sentenced Kamya to two life terms for murder and an additional 15 years for house robbery.

Lieutenant General Thembi Hadebe remarked on the significance of this sentencing: “The sentencing of the accused serves as a stern warning that such brutal acts of violence will not be tolerated in our society. Our police officers remain dedicated to working tirelessly to prevent such tragedies and to bring those responsible for criminal activities to justice.”
