The South African Police Service (SAPS) has announced the deployment of over 700 additional Public Order Policing (POP) members to various regions within KwaZulu-Natal and Mthatha in the Eastern Cape in an effort to enhance security and ensure a peaceful voting environment. This decisive move, headlined by a send-off parade in Harrismith, underscores the nation’s commitment to maintaining law and order during crucial times.

The send-off parade, held on Monday, saw National Commissioner of the SAPS, General Fannie Masemola, addressing the gathering of officers. General Masemola emphasised the importance of their mission, reiterating that these officers would bolster the existing force to protect the democratic rights of South Africans. “We are sending you off to maintain law and order. No disruptions and acts of criminality should take place under your watch. We are sending you out there to protect the constitutional right of South Africans and the integrity of the election process,” he asserted.

Mission Briefing and Objectives

During his address, General Masemola laid out the officers’ primary objectives: to prevent and combat any criminal activities that may undermine the election’s security and to ensure a safe environment for voters across these critical regions. He highlighted that SAPS has mobilised maximum resources to address the prevailing lawlessness in Mthatha, which has seen incidents like road blockades.

The urgency of the situation was underscored by recent events where police apprehended five individuals attempting to block roads leading to the Mthatha Airport. Such incidents have necessitated an intensified presence and proactive measures to forestall any further disruptions.

Support from Leadership

The parade also saw the participation of Lieutenant General Tebello Mosikili, co-chair of the National Joint Operational and Intelligence Structure (NATJOINTS). She reinforced the need for adherence to legal frameworks, urging the deployed members to execute their duties within the law’s bounds. This alignment ensures the dual objectives of maintaining order and safeguarding civil liberties.

Lieutenant General Mosikili’s presence highlighted the coordinated effort across various security branches, aiming for a seamless and effective operation. Her exhortations were clear: every effort must align with protecting the populace’s constitutional rights while maintaining robust security protocols.
