SAPS confirm burnt body in Bester’s cell has been identified

(SAPS) has indicated that the charred body found in cell 35 at the Mangaung Correctional Centre has been identified as Katlego Bereng. In a tweet, someone [BathoChief] tweeted that the body that was identified was that of his son. The family has been notified about the body in question and believed to have been utilised in the escape of rapist and murderer Thabo Bester.

By Thys Khiba – The South African Police Service (SAPS) has indicated that the charred body found in cell 35 at the Mangaung Correctional Centre has been identified as Katlego Bereng.

In a tweet, someone [BathoChief] tweeted that the body that was identified was that of his son.

The family has been notified about the body in question and believed to have been utilised in the escape of rapist and murderer Thabo Bester.

Police spokesperson Colonel Athlenda Mathe confirmed the identification of the body follows after a direct match was made with the DNA of the biological mother of the deceased.

“The family has been notified by the investigating officer (IO) and no further comment will be provided,” said Mathe.

Mathe said with all the difficulties surrounding the story, police are pleased to bring closure to the family.

Thabo Bester and his partner Dr Nandipha Magudumana were recently arrested in Tanzania.

This comes after he escaped from the MCC in Bloemfontein in May 2022.

It was reported and believed he had committed suicide by setting himself alight in his cell.

The Department of Correctional Services (DCS) later confirmed that the charred body found in his cell was not that of Bester.
