Fake Presidential Shirts
By Mpho Moloi
Pretoria – The South African Police Service (SAPS) in Gauteng has successfully executed a major sting operation, seizing fake presidential shirts valued at R569 000. The operation, carried out on 4 and 5 July 2024, targeted Pretoria East and Fordsburg, leading to the arrest of a suspect involved in the contravention of the Counterfeit Goods Act.
Gauteng Counterfeit and Contraband Operation
The Gauteng Counterfeit and Contraband Operation was a meticulously planned initiative aimed at cracking down on the counterfeit goods market that has been plaguing South Africa. As part of the operation, SAPS conducted two search and seizure warrants that culminated in the confiscation of 184 counterfeit presidential shirts.
Members of the Commercial Crime Investigations Unit and Brand Protectors collaborated closely, ensuring the operation’s success and the protection of legitimate brands. The suspect, whose identity remains undisclosed for legal reasons, is expected to make a court appearance soon to face charges under the Counterfeit Goods Act.
What are Presidential Shirts?
Presidential shirts, often associated with formal and prestigious events, are renowned for their high quality and distinct design. They gained popularity due to frequent wear by notable political figures and government officials, symbolising status and affluence. Unfortunately, the high demand and prestige associated with these garments have made them a target for counterfeiters.
