SANRAL Completes R280 Million
By Mpho Moloi
The South African National Roads Agency SOC Limited (SANRAL) has announced the completion of repairs to the significant sinkhole on the N1 near the Flying Saucer Interchange in Centurion, Gauteng. This project, which commenced in September 2023, was finalised ahead of schedule, restoring full traffic flow on this crucial economic artery.
Background and Impact
The sinkhole emerged in January 2022 following heavy rains that destabilised the dolomitic ground prevalent in the Centurion area. Its proximity to the N1 and R21 interchange necessitated immediate lane closures to ensure public safety, leading to significant traffic disruptions. The N1 and R21 are vital routes facilitating the movement of goods and commuters between Pretoria and Johannesburg, and their impairment had notable economic repercussions.
Repair Details and Challenges
Addressing the sinkhole required intricate geotechnical interventions due to the area’s dolomitic geology, which is susceptible to subsidence when exposed to excessive moisture. SANRAL’s CEO, Reginald Demana, highlighted the complexity of the repairs, stating, “With sinkholes, you never know the extent of the damage until you start excavating and drilling holes and piling in with concrete.” The repair process involved:
• Drilling 278 holes and injecting grout to stabilise the subsoil.
• Installing 55 piles, each with a diameter of 0.610 meters and an average depth of 25 meters, to reinforce the foundation.
• Implementing 161 self-drilling anchors to secure the structural integrity of the roadway.
These measures were meticulously executed to ensure long-term stability and prevent future occurrences. The total cost for the N1 sinkhole repair amounted to R280 million, reflecting the project’s scale and complexity.
Completion and Future Outlook
The successful completion of this project not only reinstates a critical transport link but also underscores SANRAL’s commitment to maintaining South Africa’s road infrastructure. Demana remarked, “Given the importance of the N1 and R21 to the economy of Pretoria, South Africa’s capital city, the construction work undertaken here was very important.” Motorists can now anticipate improved traffic flow and reduced congestion in the area.
Additional Repairs on the R21
In addition to the N1 repairs, SANRAL has also completed remedial work on a nearby sinkhole on the R21, with repairs costing R144 million. The combined efforts on both highways have significantly enhanced the safety and reliability of the region’s transport network.
Geological Considerations
Centurion’s susceptibility to sinkholes is primarily due to its dolomitic geology. Approximately 25% of Gauteng is underlain by dolomite, making areas like Centurion and Midrand more prone to such occurrences. Heavy rainfall can lead to the dissolution of dolomite, resulting in ground subsidence and the formation of sinkholes.
