The South African National Defence Force (SANDF) has vehemently denied reports alleging that several of its soldiers were captured by M23 rebels while deployed in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC).

Speaking on behalf of the defence force, spokesperson Siphiwe Dlamini expressed outright dismissal of these claims, stating, “The South African National Defence Force (SANDF) rejects with contempt any suggestion or inference that two (2) of the South African soldiers deployed as part of the SADC Mission in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (SAMIRC) have surrendered to the M23 rebels as contained in some media reports – National Security News. We want to state it categorically that all SANDF members deployed in the DRC have been accounted for. The convoluted article published by the faceless Washington correspondent is dismissed with the contempt it deserves.” Dlamini emphasized the misinformation spread by such reports and assured that measures are always taken to keep the South African public informed about the safety and status of its forces abroad.

In a similar tone, the Department of International Relations and Cooperation (DIRCO) also dismissed these reports, aligning with the defence force’s stance on maintaining transparency and accuracy regarding the situation of South African soldiers in the DRC.

The controverted report, issued by the website National Security News on 2nd April, suggested that “several South African soldiers deployed by the ANC Government into the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) as part of an ill-equipped and ill-prepared force reportedly surrendered to the M23 rebels this past week.” This story, which failed to include any tangible sources, appeared to show a bias towards pro-Rwandan sentiments. It oddly framed the M23 rebels as protectors against the alleged genocidal actions of FDLR rebels and lauded Rwanda as a pivotal security force in the region.

Addressing the flawed narrative, Clayson Monyela, spokesperson for the Department of International Relations and Cooperation, outrightly denounced the report, clarifying, “is fake news. It’s propaganda by the handlers and funders of M23. No SANDF soldiers surrendered to those rebels.”
