Durban – The South African National Civic Organisation (SANCO) in KwaZulu-Natal has ousted former President Jacob Zuma from his position as provincial chairperson due to his engagement with and campaigning for the Umkhonto Wesizwe Party (MK party).

The decision to remove Zuma came after what SANCO described as neglect and abscondment of his duties as chairperson. A statement issued by the organisation detailed the grounds for his dismissal: “Such misconduct is classified as abscondment of the office. The Provincial Executive Committee (PEC) resolved to remove him from the office of the provincial office of SANCO KwaZulu-Natal. The latest communication and decision has been set,” confirming an irrevocable rift between Zuma and the organization.

SANCO’s KZN secretary, Sizwe Cele, criticized Zuma’s neglect during a press conference in Durban on Friday: “Mr. Zuma violated the organisation’s constitution by failing to attend any of its last three meetings,” Cele explained. “His absence and current political affiliations run counter to the responsibilities and expectations attached to his leadership role within SANCO.”

The African National Congress (ANC), with which SANCO is an alliance partner, suggested further alienation as they have suspended Zuma due to his involvement with the MK party.

Zuma’s political journey took an unexpected turn last year when he was elected as the Sanco provincial chairperson. However, in a surprising turn, he publicly announced in December that he would not support the ANC in the next elections, despite its longstanding alliance with SANCO.

Instead, he declared his intention to campaign for the MK party — a new political force seemingly championed by Zuma himself.
